Nainital – Myths and Legends

Indian historic scripture, Skanda Purana mention Nanital lake in Manas Khand chapter as ‘Tririshi Sarovar’ which literary means the lake of three sages. These three rishis or sages are among the great sages of an earlier age – Atri, Pulaha and Pulastya. Sages meditate and dug a hole which soon get filled with water.

Another legendary story relates Nainital with Lord Shiva and Sati. When Sati ends herself by suiciding in fire, her half charred body was taken by Shiva. To save earth from Lord Shiva wrath, Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu cut Sati in 51 pieces which in turn establishes 51 Shakti Peeths as where the body pieces fall. Legends believes that eyes of Sati falls in the lake and it was named as ‘Nainital’ and become sacred too.
