Governor House is a grand and magnificent palace like double storied house serving as an official residence of Governor of Uttarakhand. During the British time period, Governor House also served as summer residence of Governor of North west province. Located on a vast landscape property, Governor House of Nainital also called up as ‘Raj Bhawan’.

Nainital Governor’s House – Raj Bhawan

Spreads across over the an area of 220 acres, Nainital Governor House comprises 113 rooms in its double storied building. Built as a replica of Buckingham Palace London, its has an beautiful architecture as well. During British time period, state guests & V.I.P. visit to Nainital used to stay at Raj Bhawan. Property of Governor House has a beautiful Garden, vast Golf course, Swimming Pool and large area of lush green area of Deodar and Oak trees.

History of Governor House, Nainital

Built on a replica of Buckingham Palace, Governor House foundation was laid on April 27, 1897 and completed by March 1900. Legends also told a story about Sultana Daku, the Robin Hood of India. He took a hideout in Governor house. Later on Sir Antony Mac Donnell and other Britishers Sir James La Touche, Sir John Hewett, Sir James Meston, Sir Harcourt Butler and Sir William Morris inhabited the Governor house.

Governor House Architecture

Governor house in Nainital is splendidly designed in the Victorian Gothic domestic style by the architect F.W. Stevens from Bombay. Mr. F.O. Oertel, Executive Engineer; Mr. H.S. Wildeblood, who supervised its construction played a key role in the construction of Raj Bhawan.

Raj Bhawan Golf Course

Surrounding the Governor House, there lies a high hill golfer paradise ‘Raj Bhawan Golf Course’. A masterpiece engineering shown by British army engineers, Raj Bhawan Golf Course has an 18 hole golf course with 18 different tees. Spreads in 50 acres of green land, golfing on this golf course started in 1926 but for general public it was opened from 1994.

May to August – 8 am to 6 pm

September to October – 8 am to 5 pm

November to December – 8 am to 4 pm

Remain closed on Sunday and National holidays.
